I’m not sure who your site is made to appeal to, but if it’s largely a PersonalWiki?, then I would do the following:

[new:AlexSchroeder:2006-02-26 10:23 UTC] I also think that attracting people is important. If you are unhappy with Wikipedia, you need to find other people that are also unhappy with Wikipedia and tell them about your site. I’m sure there are plenty of Wikipedia alternatives out there already, each with a different perspective: Anti-Globalization, Anti-Formalism, Pro-Subject Point Of View, etc.

There’s more on WikiFounding?, including a diagram I drew which I like very much. ;) You’re in the phase where it needs lots of seed postings, patience, and marketing skills. Notice how my biggest wiki – Emacs Wiki – has a well defined target audience, and yet I had to write about a thousand (1000!) pages, before I stopped being the main contributor to the wiki.

[new:ChristopheDucamp:2006-02-26 13:02 UTC] Hi Kenn and welcome on cw. Still don’t know if it works but I’m also in the same situation, currently SeedPosting? a brand new personal MotherWiki?. How about set up your personal WikiNode ? I feel that a PersonalWikiNode? could help people to accelerate WikiStartup? ?

[new:MattisManzel:2006-02-26 16:38 UTC] Hi, Kenn. Nice you hopped over from the odd to the community ;) Welcome.

[new:BayleShanks:2006-02-27 08:16 UTC] I visited CoolHeadz, but I couldn’t figure out what the topic or audience was. Is it supposed to be a personal wiki? Or a “jam session” with no particular topic but with whoever happens to like the attitude there? Or does it have a topic (such as discussing the news) that I didn’t notice?

[new:KennCattell:2006-02-28 00:46 UTC] set up a wikinode. wasn’t sure what to include, cuz I’m not that connected to any other communities. I am now starting to gain a much better understanding of what MeatBall? is all about, tho. I guess right now it’s a personalwiki by default. I knew that the style I’v undertaken on many pages has a pretty informal, personal tone. I do envision much more though. Bayle, I think you hit on something that’s big for me: if someone likez the attitude/vibe I’v started, then that is definitely someone I’d like to see contribute/join. Alex- Anti-Formalism, Pro-Subject Point Of View are two pretty interesting ideas, but you say they’re probably already out there?? hmm.

I knew since the beginning that various areas in Linguistics interested and would continue to interest me greatly. I have not formally studied this subject much, but I picture a place where academics could collaborate in many fieldz in Linguistics. Phonology, Phonetics (yeah, they’re different), Natural Speech (vs. written discourses) natural speech processing, orthography, writing down exactly how people really speak (ethnography), regional dialects, Semantics… I got a million of them. I think there are wayz to raise general public awareness about the value of thinking linguistically. additionally, these methodz, applied to people’z everday use of language, can help illuminate ANY other topic you might be interested in. For a while I was trying to squeeze linguistic stuff into Pedia in places it didn’t really belong, in ways that were disruptive. come to think of it it’s like disrupting shit in elementary school to make a point. I found http://www.unilang.org which has a substantial wiki, but seemz to be more than just a wiki. I gott take a look there to see how much of my linguistic jones I could satisfy there.

so- that was alot about that, & maybe a lot of the content might be in that area, but I don’t wann limit the scope right now. I’m also into current eventz, politics, but there are like prob what, literally 10M blogz on that. I think I’d have to work an encyclopedic angle there, to make it unique. or just emphasize the linguistic aspects of current eventz topics/politics. see… if I start a few “areaz”, “arenas” or separate subject matterz, how might I cross-organize them, if at all? say I had 5 areaz of subject matter, or ideally, academic fieldz. I’d like to hear as many diverse ideas as possible on interconnecting them and relating them. from any community member. InterDiscipline?, I guess, is th thing. anyone who can do really good interdiscipline is needed. I said “ideally academic fieldz” just now, but informal content (non-academic?) shouldn’t be shunned, tho.

thankz for the welcome, everyone. you guyz kick ass.

[new:KennCattell:2006-08-07 18:59 UTC] wikinfo is pretty frikkin interesting. I’v heard about forking but whoa.
