One of the difficulties with this BigTentConcept? is that there are many different types of problems to solve, and each type suggests, perhaps, a different approach. For example, there are problems that have one specific answer (what’s 6 x 7?) and others that could be addressed by multiple approaches (and everything in between). Some questions are metaphysical and others might deal with an individual’s next meal. All these classifications of problems fit within a theoretical ProblemSpace. Perhaps we can use this page to document some of the different types of problems.

Types of Problems

When talking about communities solving problems, we can think about where the problems come from. There can be community-level problems (such as civic issues that have shared responsibility and distributed benefits) and problems of individual members of the community. When there is at least one person who is eagerly interested in solving the issue and there is less ‘difused responsibility’, this can attract members to a community and serve as a ParticipantMotivator?.
“How can we do better?” vs. “How can we increase x by y?”

Problems can also be sorted into categories based on the ultimate benefactor(s) of a potential solution.

There can be awkward SocialDynamics? in CollectiveProblemsolving? for PersonalProblems?. This awkwardness can stem from the imbalance in benefactor(s) of a solution. The person with the PersonalProblem? will be seen to benefit more from the solution than everyone else involved.

Relevance to Problem Solving

We can use different types of problems to test how well proposed solution frameworks might handle them. We can also determine if particular solution frameworks are better at handling different types of problems or whether ProblemSpace classifications is even an important concept.

KeithHopper: I was playing with this idea that there were two important variables in designing problem solving software: Specificity of the problem, and depth of the solution. 1) Are you trying to solve a general problem, or the one staring you in the face? and 2) How do you expect to solve it with the software?
